Chorley Chess Congress

26th Chorley Chess Congress Results - 25th to 27th August 2001

Held at Chorley Town Hall, Chorley (Six Rounds). Incorporating Lancashire Championships.

Report

The annual Chorley Chess Congress was once again held over the August Bank Holiday weekend in the spacious venue of Chorley Town Hall.

170 players took part in the six round event. In the Open section Tom Wiley put up a strong fight against the two Grand Masters, Keith Arkell and Nigel Davies, by drawing both his games against them. But as he drew with other players Keith and Nigel came out winners as they both won against their other opponents and drew the game between themselves.

In the Major, for players graded under 175, the five highest scoring players in the penultimate round all shared the prize money after the final round. The brothers David & Martin Cutmore from Wood Green shared 3rd place with John Thompson whilst Bob Newton from Morecambe and Jon Burgess from Chorlton shared the first prize.

The Intermediate section, for players graded under 140 resulted in a three way tie with Martin Burns from Stockport, CW Davies from Rose Forgrove and Tony Pawson also from Rose Forgrove. The Minor, an under 110 tournament had an outright winner in JM Walker from Leicestershire.

The tournament also hosted the Lancashire individual championships. Lancashire players who have been coming to the Chorley Congress for many years featured in the roll call of Lancashire Champions this year. George Ellison from Poulton is the Lancashire Open Champion, Bob Newton the Lancashire Major Champion, John McBride and John Whitfield share the title of Lancashire Intermediate Champion and the Lancashire Minor Champion is shared between Tony Rigby, Neil Coward and James McKiernan. Tony Rigby also won the Eric Wandless-Renton trophy that is awarded to the player with the highest score who is resident in the borough of Chorley.
